This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
